ABSTRACT
Athens was the setting in which philosophers created belief systems that were instrumental in shaping Western culture. Greek philosophers recognized that we live in an orderly universe. As rational beings, we have the opportunity to seek truth and virtue, and we are responsible for our own individual satisfaction and happiness. Music and music education were visible manifestations of both societal orderliness and individual pleasure.
