ABSTRACT

Exposure to high-risk factors in the protracted, 11-year Global War on Terrorism requires service members and veterans to discover new and innovative ways of adapting after their return to society. This has created the need for these combat veterans, their families, the Department of Veteran Affairs, veteran service organizations, and community-based medical and behavioral healthcare agencies to identify and maximize their coping skills. Resiliency—the ability to overcome stress and trauma—can be achieved using a set of skills, knowledge and abilities that is now being utilized by some outdoor adventure and community-based programs to create innovative and individualized reintegration services for our redeployed veterans. This chapter will document how resiliency skills are integrated in these outdoor adventure and community-based programs to expand options for successful community readjustment.
