ABSTRACT

The current book is one that extends the public health focus that the Group addressed in 1998 at a formally structured World Health Organization (WHO) workshop under the auspices of the European Centre for Environment and Health based in Rome, Italy. This meeting resulted in 1999 in a groundbreaking discussion document entitled Global Ecological Integrity and ‘Sustainable Development’: Cornerstones of Public Health (Soskolne and Bertollini, 1999). It served a major advocacy role in bringing attention to the linkages between ecological integrity and health. This document demonstrated that, to ensure a sustainable future, we must pay attention to the biological integrity of life on Earth. It recognized that humans are the world’s single largest disruptive force.
