ABSTRACT

While the work of Cage and Cunningham was regularly showcased in national media, they were not alone during the 1950s and 1960s in pioneering the possibilities of perform ing electronic music in a live setting. Electronic music was also making inroads into the world of jazz, America’s “classical music,” with its long tradition of musicianship, improvisation and live performance. This chapter explores the historic evolution of electronic music in jazz and the roots of electronic music in live performance across the arts.
