ABSTRACT

The Phnom Samkos Wildlife Sanctuary is part of the Cardamom Mountains complex of protected areas, in the south-west of Cambodia. It measures 332,566 hectares, and covers a wide range of altitudes, endowing the area with very high levels of lowland to montane biodiversity. There are over 13,000 people living in Phnom Samkos Wildlife Sanctuary, most of whom suffered terribly during the Civil War; however, development programmes aimed at helping people resettle in the area have attracted vast numbers of immigrants that are encroaching on the forest and causing habitat loss.
