ABSTRACT

It is well known that the nature, form and content of education for children is inextricably linked with their future roles in adult society. The education process is a highly complex one. In equipping children for these adult roles a whole range of different forms of knowledge are transmitted. They include the basic fundamental skills of numeracy and literacy essential in an industrial society; they also include the learning of certain types of skills which are necessary for many vocational type jobs; the development of abstract reasoning is encouraged amongst particular sets of children. In addition to all this, education ensures the transmission of the dominant cultural values specific to the society in that point in time.
