Culture and education

An educationally relevant concept of culture There is a familiar distinction between two conceptions of culture, the descriptive, anthropological characterization of culture as a whole way of life and the normative or evaluative conception. [1] However, this simple distinction does not take account of some of the ways in which the word is used by educationists, particularly with reference to the relationship between culture and social stratification. Thus, whilst retaining this fundamental descriptive-normative distinction, it is necessary to mark a number of other distinctions at different levels of generality.
