ABSTRACT
This chapter presents an assessment of the position of machine translation (MT) in the world today. In this assessment I address questions such as: how was the current situation of MT arrived at? What does MT mean today? How is MT perceived in different parts of the world and by different sectors of society? What contribution does MT have to make now and in the future?
