ABSTRACT
What is urban? While this may seem a good place to start it may also appear a stupid question. Most people know an urban area when they see one. However, the point of the question was not recognition but definition. How are we able to define ‘urban’? What, if anything, is uniquely urban? What makes urban areas qualitatively different from other types of areas?
