Managing facilities

This chapter deals with the effective management of accommodation onboard, including cabins, public areas, crew areas and deck areas. In examining this department, a number of issues are considered, including administration, yield management, design aspects, routines and schedules, and environmental issues [1]. The constraints on planning accommodation that were discussed earlier, namely, the need to utilize space economically, the increasing demand for enhanced passenger facilities and the current trend to ensure cruise ships sail on full capacity, all play a part for operational managers in this department.
