Health, safety and security
By the end of this chapter the reader should be able to appreciate the range of issues that can affect health, safety and security for people on cruise ships. The chapter will include an overview of the US Public Health Service Vessel Sanitation Program (VSP) operated by the Centers for Disease Control and Protection (CDC) and a discussion of food hygiene in relation to cruise ship operators. This will allow for reflection on the regulatory framework and the implications for cruise operators in relation to port health authorities. In terms of security, the International Ship and Port Facility Security Code (ISPS Code) will be considered. Finally, the chapter will conclude by examining issues relating to providing a service to customers who have special needs.
