ABSTRACT

What follows deals (as if as a case study) with the interpretation (and to move from a temporal register to a spatial one) of one large historical artifact: the remains of the ancient Greek sanctuary at Delphi (Figure 9.1). It is concerned with the problem of reconciling disparate bits of evidence in a variety of media about the origins, nature, functions, and historical evolution of that remarkable object.
