ABSTRACT
Coda. A concluding passage, often in music, the function of which is to bring a composition to a cogent and well-proportioned close. From Latin cauda, “tail.” Etymologically unrelated to caution, but one must take heed and be cautious of allowing the tail to wag the body of the text (as was often said of Beethoven’s seemingly interminable symphonic codas).
