ABSTRACT
The diversity of socialist traditions has been reflected in the variety of socialist arguments. The familiar question ‘what is socialism?’ therefore requires a less familiar answer. If there is not a single socialist tradition but a plurality of traditions, then the ideas and arguments associated with these traditions have to be discussed in similarly plural terms. So the question should more properly be asked as ‘what are the ideas and arguments of what kinds of socialisms?’
