ABSTRACT

But where does socialism stand now? Is there a new socialism to be constructed out of the variety of socialisms discussed here? We know where the socialist tradition has come from, but is it possible to see where it might now be going? Before offering some concluding thoughts on these large questions, it is useful to look a little more closely at the British case. For it is in Britain that such questions are most clearly framed, and where the answers given are likely to acquire a more general significance.
