Interviewing is one of the successes and one of the failures of modern British broadcasting. With other forms of ‘invitation’ broadcasting such as phone-ins, it has succeeded over the years in bringing multitudes of people in front of the camera and the microphone to talk about their experiences and to give their views which are then heard widely when previously they reached hardly anyone. The variety of public opinion is heard as never before, compelling public authorities, including government, to pay more attention to it. Theprocess contributes to public scepticism ofauthority which is less able now to disguise incompetence. It contributes hugely to freedom of expression, providing added value when opinions are heard through the media by large numbers of people rather than by a few.
