ABSTRACT

A cognitive map represents the impossibilities of total space comprehension based on an individual's experience in that environment. To improve Lynch's concept, Jameson proposes that cognitive mapping involves three elements: the individual subject, the real, and the imaginary projection. James Cameron's Avatar (2009) remains one of Hollywood's most successful blockbusters, perceived as a game-changer in cinematic history. A spectacular science-fiction adventure, the film quickly achieved global popularity, drew the attention of diverse audiences, and generated an endless variety of interpretations. The film was released in a range of formats and screens, from IMAX to 3D. Cognitive mapping involves three elements: the individual subject, the real, and the imaginary projection. It is as important to take films to the viewers as it is to tune into their experiences of cinema. Charging and re-charging our valences to the system of world cinema will inflect that discourse with the desired plurality this world contains and demands.
