ABSTRACT
In the previous chapter, a discussion of resistance to change in the psychiatric system led to the conclusion that this phenomenon could only be fully understood by seeing psychiatry as serving an important underlying purpose, and to the contention that psychiatry is required to be the agent of society while purporting to be the agent of the individual; and its main function is not treatment but social control.
