ABSTRACT

Most LEAs will make some provision for governor training and governors need to be encouraged to use such facilities as are available, particularly when they are new to the governing body. There is also much to be said for providing in-house training for the governors as a group. There may be skills among the members which can be shared with everyone; it may also be a good idea to get an outside speaker or leader for a day. A governing body may decide to spend a day or part of a day together looking at some problem which needs more lengthy consideration than there is time for at the normal governors’ meetings. Time may be spent profitably reviewing the work of the governing body and evaluating its effect, perhaps using questions such as those given at the end of each chapter in this book. This kind of exercise has an additional value in helping to reinforce the feeling of being a team. It may also be a good idea to plan a joint working day with some of the staff.
