ABSTRACT

Governors are there to support the headteacher and staff and to provide a range of additional expertise. They have overall responsibility for the conduct of the school while the head and senior staff have responsibility for its day-to-day running and management. School Governors: A Guide to the Law (DfEE 1997) describes the relationship between the head and the governing body as follows:

The governing body have a general responsibility for seeing that the school is run effectively, acting within the framework set by legislation and the policies of the LEA, so that it provides the best possible education for its pupils. But they are not expected to take detailed decisions about the day-to-day management of the school – that is the job of the head. A good head will discuss all aspects of school life with the governing body.
