ABSTRACT

Tell the uninitiated – the ignorant layperson – that your ambition is to go into television, and they will immediately conjure up an image of you sitting behind a desk reading the news, or on a breakfast television sofa interviewing somebody about their latest book. Because to so many, the personalities are television. They are what they see on the screen, day in, day out. And the programmes are made to look so slick that it doesn’t occur to most viewers that while the programme they’re watching is going on (or was being recorded) there are 101 people (see the last 11 chapters) working flat out to ensure that those personalities are seen in the best possible light.
