ABSTRACT
Puritanism has traditionally been defined in relation to Anglicanism, since historians viewed it as the radical Protestant alternative to the Anglican Church and the ideology of a small but assertive opposition group who wanted to align the Church of England with the Reformed Church on the Continent. Puritans were, therefore, usually described as Calvinists or as reformers who wanted to purge the Anglican Church of its Catholic features.
