ABSTRACT

The governing body is responsible for the allocation of the schools delegated budget and for the oversight of its financial management. Its decisions and processes parallel those in other areas of the management wi th in the schoo l , in tha t the au thor i t y and responsibilities of governors are largely delegated to the headteacher, senior staff, coordinators, postholders, class teachers and support s taf f . Each level of responsibi l i ty has i t s purpose, level of accountability and mandate to act. The common aim is to ensure that the budget is allocated as effectively as possible. The governors are publicly accountable to the annual meeting of parents. They must demonstrate that the finances allocated to the school have been used to best effect for the purchase of the staffing, premises, materials and externally provided services, required to ensure the effective delivery of the National Curriculum and religious education to the children who attend the school.
