ABSTRACT

This chapter examines the socio-economic and political conditions for the rise of NPPs. It analyses 168 elections that took place between 1960 and 2000 in the 15 West European countries. As seen in Chapter 2, the first and oldest NPP is the Socialist People’s Party in Norway, emerging in 1961 (renamed the Socialist Left Party in 1975). To cover fully the emergence and success of NPPs, the analyses date back to 1960.
