The power of discourse

David Lodge’s novelNiceWork poetry byTomLeonard

The first half of this chapter draws, for a theoretical perspective, on Norman Fairclough’s Language and Power (1989), which has as backdrop (Fairclough’s word) work by the linguist Halliday, the semiotician Kress and social theorists including Althusser, Foucault, Bourdieu and Habermas. The second half of the chapter looks in a related way at Sandra Harris’s work on courtroom discourse.
