ABSTRACT

If the business outlook is not quite as straightforward as it seemed initially, what about the effect of the Internet on providers of content, that is to say journalists? The continuing expansion of Internet publishing means the horizons of the paper-bound scribe looking to move into electronic journalism are boundless. It also means that no journalist can expect to remain untouched by the electronic media in some form. The job market is booming according to the managing director of one recruitment agency: ‘Fifty per cent of the editorial positions we now handle have an online element to them . . . online recruitment is going to explode’ (Urquhart 1998). As far as employer expectations are concerned, the main differences lie in what companies do with their sites and what technical skills they expect of their staff.
