ABSTRACT
The previous three chapters have focused primarily on the ‘selves’ of daughters – of the women themselves as daughters, and of their own daughters. This chapter will turn to a consideration of the ways in which maternal ‘selfhood’ is defined and understood. In particular, it will explore the relationship between constructions of children’s needs and the meanings attached to mothering.
