ABSTRACT

Distress is the experience by which we signify that all is not well with our world. It may be life-saving or life-threatening. We express it in many different ways, determined largely by our previous experience, all of which indicate a state of ‘dis-ease’ with our bodies, with our environment, and with other people. Health is that state of equilibrium that we enjoy when we thrive in the context in which we live. Illness, or dis-ease, represents a deviation from that healthy equilibrium.
