Narrative and ideology

Inthischapterweturntothequestionoftherelationshipbetween narrativeandthesocialstructure.Whyisthisataskwhichisworth undertaking?

Therearemanyobviouslinksbetweenartformsandthestructure ofthesocietyinwhichtheyareproducedandconsumed(Wolff, 1981:26-48).Forinstance,andmostobviouslyofall,artistsmust betrainedintheircraft,trainedtoproducewhateverartefactsthey willproduce.Iftheyaretodevoteasubstantialproportionoftheir timetoarttheymustbesufficientlyrewardedfortheireffortsto enablethemtolive.Ofcourse,notallsocietiesconformtothis pattern:manytribalsocietiesdonothaveformal,institutionalised trainingprogrammesfortheirartsandnotallsocietieshaveartists whomakealivingfromtheirart.Ingeneral,thelowerthedegreeof divisionoflabourinasociety,thelessthelikelihoodoftheartsbeinga distinctsectorofit.Norshouldthesepointsbetakentoinferthatonly thosewhofollowsuchtrainingprogrammesandmakealivingfromart canbecalledartists,whateverthenatureofthesocietyinwhichthey live.Butingeneral,artusesskills,whichhavetobeacquired,and frequentlybutnotuniversallythoseskillsarerewarded.Thisprocess necessarilyinvolvestheartistoccupyingaplaceinthesocialstructure, albeitthattheplaceinquestionwillvaryenormouslyfromsocietyto society.
