ABSTRACT
The nature of the paid work careers of both partners may have significant impacts upon later life. The value of pensions generated during paid working life is one obvious impact as is health. The value that people place upon paid work vis-à-vis family life is of crucial importance. For many people, especially men, the ability to earn an income is a vital element of their own identity.
