ABSTRACT

One very common theme in popular literature and folk mythology is that of adultery. Lawson’s (1988) study of adultery in the UK suggests that well over half of all men and women engage in adulterous affairs at some time. Plainly, adulteries can be short-or long-lived and have a wide range of outcomes, may be declared or secret, may lead to stress or even revenge and are often cited in divorce cases. Whilst classic sex studies, such as Kinsey et al. (1948, 1953), revealed far higher levels of extra-marital sex than previously suspected, it seems unlikely that we have reliable research even now. What this hints at, however, is the hidden structure of sexuality.
