ABSTRACT
News may seem, on the face of it, a genre that does not accord easily with the other accounts of popular culture in this book. It appears to be determined by the reality of events and by the political requirements of a democracy. In either case, the topdown forces would seem more powerful than the bottom-up productivity that is more characteristic of popular culture.
