ABSTRACT

Motivating teachers to learn. Teachers appreciate that their pupils’ abilities to learn vary considerably in any one class, but in a situation where teachers are the learners it is quite often the case that they are treated as a homogeneous group. The ability of adults to learn about ICT will be dependent on a whole host of things that go on in their lives. Stoll and Fink (1996), in summarising the research on adult learning, point out that age, gender and stage of career influence an individual’s approach to learning. The first step in planning may be a consideration of how to motivate the teachers to learn new skills when they believe that their approach to teaching is successful. There are many arguments the planners put forward to motivate the staff, and the following may be particularly important:

• Pupils enjoy working with computers and, if used in the right way, they can play a significant role in helping them to learn.
