ABSTRACT
The central contemporary question in the cognitive psychology of proper names is ‘Why are they particularly difficult to recall?’ Before considering the evidence that they are indeed more difficult to recall (see Chapters 3 and 5), and the theoretical explanations for the phenomenon (see Chapters 5, 6 and 7), we shall consider the cognitive aspects of the functions that proper names serve.
