ABSTRACT

Learning outcomes

Upon completion of this chapter the reader should be able to:

describe what the main trends have been with regard to the globalisation of sport;

identify the sport products for which high performance sport (HPS) is the central and critical element;

explain why the commercialisation of sport, and of HPS in particular, has led to the emergence of a sub-industry of high performance experts and facilitators such as agents, coaches and consultants;

explain how the pressure to perform applies not only to the athlete but to others involved in HPS as well; and

provide an overview of how sport business, sport governing bodies and sport high performance institutes are required to carefully consider and balance each others’ interests and objectives.
