ABSTRACT

We assume that the first question people will ask when they consider the title of this book is, what do the authors mean by addiction? This particular question is posed and addressed by several of the contributing authors, especially by Angelika Groterath in her forthright essay about concepts of addiction and dependence (Chapter 1), and by Tim Cantopher (Chapter 2) who explores this question as well as the place of the psychotherapies in treating people who have drug problems. The fact that we have linked addiction with treatment and arts therapies implies that we are writing specifically about people whose addictions cause them serious life problems, including physical and mental illness, and in Treatment of Addiction we focus on addiction to substances such as alcohol, heroine, cocaine and other so-called ‘hard drugs’.
