ABSTRACT
In addition to Maerchen-type romantic fairytales, the repertoire of oral folktale includes a considerable variety of picaresque or horrific stories, which on the whole tend to be more stable in their transmission than the tale-types we have considered so far. This makes it possible to discuss them in a more compressed form, and examine a number of often closely related types together.
