ABSTRACT
The rhetoric surrounding childbirth and motherhood reflects the belief that the birth of a baby is a ‘happy event’ and that motherhood itself is a universally fulfilling experience for women. The ideological implications of these beliefs have been well documented by feminist writers (Oakley, 1980; Phoenix et al., 1991) and are discussed in Chapter 1.
