ABSTRACT

It further outlines how far individual experiences of depression following childbirth could be linked to those experienced by others by confronting crucial questions. Are there common features of PND? Is PND related to the birth per se? Or is the woman’s life and the meaning she placed upon that particular period of time more important in determining her emotional state? How far may any experience of depression in the post-natal period be assessed as either pathological or a reasonable response to specific stresses and pressures? The interview data are used to address these issues.
