ABSTRACT
The information about recruitment of respondents is detailed in Appendix II. Profiles and reproductive histories are presented briefly below, based on information obtained during the interviews which took place between 1986 and 1987. I hope that these brief profiles will provide a little background to the respondents and contextualise the extracts quoted throughout the book. For full case studies see Nicolson, 1988. Details of their living arrangements, social class and birth histories are summarised in the following tables. All names have been changed.
