ABSTRACT

The precise details of the tasks to be carried out by a designer (usually a consulting engineer) vary according to the nature and type of project. In a civil engineering project, such as a bridge or a dam, the engineer is likely to play a leading role, carrying out the design of all civil engineering elements, but will be required to coordinate the works of others and also to liaise closely with the client. In building projects it is usual for the structural engineer to be a member of the design team, which normally comprises architects, services consultants, quantity surveyors and a planning supervisor. Nowadays, a project manager is appointed to co-ordinate the work of the consultants and also acts as a link between the client and the team. Historically, the architect had this role, but fashions have changed.
