ABSTRACT
In this chapter, an attempt will be made to list and describe the function of the various elements from which structures are made. There is, inevitably, a certain amount of mathematics involved in this process but it has been kept to the minimum necessary for the understanding of the behaviour of members and hence for gaining an understanding of the effect on the performance of the variables considered.
