ABSTRACT
One of my friends – an eminent engineer – once remarked that loading was one of the biggest unknowns in engineering. This rather facetious observation is more profound than it may first appear. For instance when we use a uniformly distributed load in design, it should be appreciated that the loading may be far from uniform and its magnitude may not always be what is encountered in practice.
