ABSTRACT

Teaching physical education (PE) has one great advantage. The children want to do it! They want to be active. They enjoy exploring both space and their ability to relate in that space; one only has to watch the way they move into the playground or hall at the beginning of a PE lesson – they feel a real release and happiness at escaping the classroom. They are happy to experiment with bat, ball, hoops, ropes and other kinds of equipment that both interest and challenge them. They seek ‘manipulative mastery’ of equipment. They respond well to all areas of the PE curriculum (Lavin 1999); many identify Physical Education as a favourite subject in the curriculum.
