ABSTRACT

This chapter deals with the Russian perspective on global careers by focusing on the unique Russian context, which is central to understanding the factors that advance or hinder the global careers of Russian employees. Given adverse country conditions for developing global careers, such as the highly hierarchical structures of Russian business and prevalent nepotism, many Russians choose to go abroad, on either a temporary or permanent basis, to commence their global careers. Those who stay in Russia, however, often prefer to work for Russian subsidiaries of Western multinationals, as most of them offer clear, merit-based career development paths, a benefit that may also lead to expatriation. The chapter also provides recommendations to Russian executives and policymakers on how to curb the current brain drain of top Russian talent.
