ABSTRACT

In this chapter, we focus on the global careers of Hungarians, which are strongly shaped by the unique culture, language, and political transitions of the past decades. The global careers of Hungarians, while strongly influenced by economic and historical developments, are also affected by the characteristics of the people and the domestic labor market, and by emigration and immigration issues. Compared with other, neighboring countries, the level of migration in Hungary is relatively low, although it has increased over the last few years. Upon taking a closer look, we find that the global careers of Hungarians take two major, distinctively different forms: self-initiated expatriation and the global careers initiated by major multinational players that support Hungarian employees in developing their knowledge and skills in another business unit, in a different country, within the same organization.
