ABSTRACT

This chapter draws on a range of sources. In part, as with the other chapters in the book, it draws on the testimony of experienced and accomplished teachers in the field of managing pupil behaviour. It is sometimes suggested that teachers who are expert at managing pupil behaviour are not able to articulate what it is that they do which works so well (Grigorenko et al., 2006). It is sometimes termed ‘tacit’ knowledge, which cannot, for some reason, be transmitted to other human beings. Having interviewed over 120 teachers, many of whom were very experienced, I did not find this to be the case, and many teachers were able to talk about the thinking, judgements and actions that made a difference to pupil behaviour, and some of their comments form part of this chapter.
