ABSTRACT

Our curriculum structure had been partly ‘secondary based’ with some specialist teaching, particularly in the upper years. This was being reviewed because of loss of teaching staff. My responsibility was for coordinating the introduction of design and technology, which had never been on the timetable, and leading all the staff towards teaching it. Early efforts included consulting other schools in the locality and joining a local coordinators’ group (made up mostly of technology ‘specialists’). After careful consideration, school policy defined technology as ‘cross-curricular’, to be taught on a thematic or project basis, to enable the programmes of study to ‘fit in’ with other subjects.
