First generation: The world in a dark room

The first Italian picture show took place in Rome on the 12 March 1896. It was staged by a travelling salesman of the Lumière brothers, two French industrialists who manufactured photographic and cinematic equipment, and presented moving pictures to advertise their cameras. A year later, the new art had already been tried out in all the big cities and had met everywhere with an enthusiastic response.
