ABSTRACT

The impact of race and gender on the formulation of psychiatric theory and the delivery of psychiatric care have been widely discussed. Their interaction and the effect of race on gender, particularly for those who are black and female, has been less well addressed. For the sake of brevity, the term black people will be used to denote all those who are discriminated against on the basis of skin colour. Our experience is that women from the ethnic minorities are doubly oppressed by the racism of the host country and the demands of patriarchy of their native cultures.
